This lightweight little steamer is my tool of choice for quickly and easily creating texture with Texture Magic.

Texture Magic is a steam-activated fabric used to create texture on fabric.  When hot steam is applied to the Texture Magic, it shrinks -- up to 30% in every direction! 

The secret to producing texture is to sew the Texture Magic to another piece of fabric, so that when you steam the Texture Magic, causing it to shrink, the other fabric goes along for the ride.  The base layer (Texture Magic) shrinks.  The top layer (the fabric you want to texturize) has to go somewhere, so it puckers up in between your stitching lines, creating wonderful texture.

Because it is steam (not heat) that activates the Texture Magic, a steamer is the easiest tool to use.  A steam iron works perfectly well, too, but you must be careful not to touch the Texture Magic with the hot sole plate of the iron.  Heat won't ruin the Texture Magic or melt it or make it stick to your iron.  It will, however, make the Texture Magic stiff.  If you use steam, the Texture Magic stays very soft and supple.

  • In seconds, the Texture Magic begins shrinking and in no time at all your fabric is texturized and you are ready to proceed with your project.  The Texture Magic stays very soft and supple.

  Other uses for the steamer:

  • If you prewash and dry your fabrics, take them out of the dryer.  Pin the piece up on a design wall.  A few back and forth swishes with the steamer and the wrinkles are gone and your fabric is ready to use.

  • Remove wrinkles from clothing much more quickly than with an iron.  Steam with the clothes hanging or press flat as with an iron.

  • The steamer comes with an attachment for facial steaming -- perfect for deep cleaning your skin.
