The Friend Ship
A happy, colorful quilt to celebrate the special friends in your life!
This whimsical 55" x 75" quilt was the grand-prize winner of the 2003 Bernina Quilt Guilds for Charity Contest and was donated to YouthLINC, a charity that encourages youth to participate in service projects both at home and abroad.
Because the theme of the contest was Friendship, the quilt design was based on this quote: "There are big ships and small ships but there are no ships like friendships."
Three intrepid sailors navigate life's stormy seas in a homemade sailboat. A seasick kitty, a happy puppy, and fish cavorting in the swirling waves complete the scene.
The background for the quilt was made in a class on story quilts taught by Mary Lou Weidman. This pattern includes general instructions only for the center panel of the quilt but suggestions and references are given for making a lively and unique border.
Special thanks go to Pati Beck for drawing the design for the quilt.
Note: The drawing for the center of the quilt must be enlarged to make a full-size pattern.
Comments. . .
This quilt was made by four members of the Dixie Quilt Guild: Ginny Affleck, Pati Beck, Joann Laub, and Annie Unrein. Mary Lou is tickled pink because it was started in a three day workshop that was tons of fun. Four of the friends got an all expense paid trip to Houston. Congratulations girls! And it goes to a charity too! A story quilt with a great story and a wonderful ending.
