Fall In Love with Sewing 2020

Valentine’s Day makes for a great excuse to show someone a little love, even if that someone is yourself! We decided to do a round-up of some of our favorite small sewing projects to inspire you to sew something beautiful.

Flipping Out

Flipping Out is top of our list this year. Not only because it’s a new pattern (Fall 2019), but because it’s fun to make and really versatile as a finished project. You’ll enjoy how easy it is to carry items when it’s securely zipped, as well as how it can be unzipped and the outside flipped down to stand proudly on a desktop.

The pattern includes instructions for two sizes. Here are some great items to tuck inside!

Small size:

  • Pencils
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scissors
  • Rotary cutters
  • Toys
  • Chocolates

Large size:

  • Knitting needles/yarn
  • A bottle of wine or other favorite drink
  • Larger craft supplies
  • Toys

Clam Up

Sewing a set of Clam Ups is a no-brainer, no matter the occasion. The pattern includes instructions for 5 adorable sizes that are able to nest inside of each other.

This project will not only make fantastic gifts, but it will provide you with the opportunity to grow more confident with installing zippers. Check out our Zippers Are Easy tutorials!

If you’re giving it as a gift, try filling it with little sweets or a gift card. And if you’re keeping it for yourself they make great coin purses, pouches for feminine products, or hair ties!

Other items to fill them with:

  • First aid supplies
  • Wonder Clips
  • Chap stick or lip balm
  • Gift cards
  • Small legos/toys/figurines/barbie shoes
  • Candies

All Bottled Up

All Bottled Up is perfect for the nail artist in your life. This pattern was made to store small objects, like nail polish, essential oils, massage oils, or travel soaps. All three sizes are included in the pattern, so you can choose what best fits your needs.

Fold-over elastic is used in the little internal holders, along with a bit of lightweight mesh fabric. These supplies will stretch just enough to hold small items in place, and they are surprisingly easy to sew with. No need to be intimidated!

Small size: 5"W x 3.5"H x 2.5"D

Medium size: 8"W x 3.5"H x 2.5"D

Large size: 11"W x 3.5"H x 2.5"D

Simple Strips Placemats

Simple Strips Placemats is a great project for a beginning sewist! The key to great homemade placemats is washability, and because these placemats are made with Soft And Stable, you’ll have no problem cleaning spills. If they get soiled, simply toss them in the wash with the rest of your laundry.

These placements are a brilliant way to teach a new sewist how to use their machine, as well as a great project to try testing out Soft And Stable for the first time.

The pattern is really easy and you’ll have fun choosing fabric from your stash to make it. Sew it to match your kitchen, to suit a holiday dinner, or sew a set for a friend in colors they’ll love.

This pattern can be made with a single Soft and Stable project pack, which contains four 13½" x 18½" pieces.

Handle It

Handle It: a delightful housewarming gift! And if you haven’t sewn one for yourself, yet, then you’re missing out.

This pattern gives you a handy place to tuck your grocery list so you don’t forget it on your way out the door. There are slip pockets for anything: keys, pencils, gift cards, notepads. There is also a wide fabric strap on the back for slipping in bills and letters to mail.

The pattern has optional sewing instructions for using chalkboard fabric (a cute place to write erasable notes) or for including a little swivel hook to hold keys/fobs.

Other items to fill it with:

  • Sewing supplies (for the sewing room!)
  • Small books for the kids' room
  • Phone/charger/electronics
  • Journal
  • Battery-operated nightlight
  • Writing utensils

Double Zip Gear Bag

Double Zip Gear Bag allows roomy storage for both travel and at-home use. Versatile in its application, we recommend filling the bag with necessities for a new mom, or a hair/shaving kit for the handsome man in your life, or a child’s toys/blocks, or to organize messy drawers.

The finished project is full to open with its double zips, and it makes a great gift. Sew it in fabrics to match your room or suitcase. Choose fun colors of lightweight mesh fabric to add some flair. It’s as fun to make as it is to use.

Great ideas for using this project:

  • Organizing your sewing space (think rotary cutters, scissors!)
  • Baby shower (fill it with cloth nappies and formula)
  • Electronics (video games/controllers/cords)
  • Dopp kit (toiletries, etc.)
  • Healthy snacks/dried foods for a road trip
  • Socks and undergarment organization

Renaissance Ribbon Bags

Renaissance Ribbon Bags: Luxuriously soft, these pouches are fast, fun, and easy! The pattern includes instructions for two sizes, and if you’re using our Renaissance Ribbon Bags finishing kit, you’ll have the ribbon you’ll need for both.

These pouches are a fun way to organize toiletries in a guest bathroom, store small items in a suitcase, and ideal for gift-giving.

If you don’t like the ribbon options we have in our finishing kits, head over to the Renaissance Ribbons website and pick through their ever-growing colorful stash.

Leftover ribbon is great for using as borders and accents in other projects (hint: think, our Flipping Out pattern, mentioned above!)

Happy Stitching!

Thank you for reading our list of sewing ideas for this Valentine’s Day. We hope you were inspired and that you take the time to make something beautiful! Happy stitching.
