Grand Prize Winner

Maker: Meryle C.

Pattern: Ultimate Travel Bagand iCases

Fabric: Acapulco by DeLeon for Alexander Henry

Story: "I enjoyed making both of these ByAnnie patterns as my travel companions. I decided not to use a contrasting fabric on the outer edge of the I-Case because using the same print would hide my inexperience with this kind of binding. I was very pleased with the outcome of these patterns. I also used a scrap of the fabric left over which was attached to Soft and Stable, and made a glasses case.

Purchasing the class for the Ultimate Travel Bag provided visual clarity to the written directions. Purchasing the finishing kit was very helpful. My completed projects look so professional. The bulk was a challenge but the stiletto proved to be of great help.”

For me, the most enjoyable part of the process was sewing the pieces together and watching the bag take shape. The most challenging part for me was sewing the binding onto the exposed seams. It was hard to get that exactly right, but I took extra time and it shows.

After the bag was sewn, I wanted it to have a crisper shape, so I used a tailor's point press and steam iron to steam and press all the seams around the bag. I turned the bag inside out and steamed and pressed from that side as well. The result is a bag that holds its shape with nice crisp lines. I really enjoyed making this pattern."

Maker: Eric G.

Pattern: Out and About

Fabric: Oh The Places You'll Go and Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss Enterprises for Robert Kaufman

Story: "Enjoyed the challenge of making this adorable backpack for my grandson. I learned so much about working with zippers, especially zippers by the yard and how to insert the zipper tabs.

My greatest challenge involved working with the bindings. I just had to go slowly and have a great deal of patience.

I made this project for my grandson to take to preschool and he uses it everyday!”

Runner Up

Maker: Michelle E.

Pattern: Ultimate Travel Bag

Fabric: Hand Drawn Garder, Field Study, and Second Nature by Anna Maria Horner from FreeSpirit Fabrics.

Story: "I love the end product. Such a sturdy and usable bag. The front zipper pocket is my fav."

Runner Up

Maker: Rose V.

Pattern: Clam Up and Catch All Caddy 2.0

Fabric: All Stars by Tula Pink from FreeSpirit Fabrics

Story: "I made this set for my daughter, a busy, working mother of two. She loves to keep things organized and she loves vibrant colors. These two patterns were perfect! The numerous pockets and the sturdy construction of the caddy make it so versatile. My daughter wound up using it to store her sketching and art supplies. Now, when she has a few spare moments, she can relax and sketch or doodle without having to scurry around looking for her pencils and other materials. The wide-mouth, nesting pouches were a last minute inspiration. I thought I'd make a couple of them to supplement the caddy, but I had so much fun coordinating the fabrics that I just kept going until I had a complete set! I lined the pouches with Slicker Iron-on Vinyl Interfacing to make them kid-proof! I was so pleased with the outcome, I made a set for myself!"

Runner Up

Maker: Ginny P.

Pattern: I’ll Drink To That

Fabric: Wildflower Bluebonnet Favorite Fabric by Sentimental Studios for Moda Fabrics

Story: "From the first time I saw this pattern, I wanted to make one...and that I did! I took it to my wine tasting group to tote my wine and crackers and boy was it a hit! so much so that I got requests. I will say, sewing two at the same time was a time saver. First I cut out all the pieces. Next I fused all the pieces and then I moved to the sewing machine. HINT: If you don't have a Stiletto, get one! I used it all the time.

I did refer to the Add-on Video to help me with a few of the steps; mainly sewing on the zipper. Once I did the first bag, the second was a no-brainer. I was able to make these two beverage totes out of fabric I had already bought at some Shop Hops. I bought the largest quantity of Soft and Stable because I know I will use it in other projects. I can't wait to bring these two "I'll Drink to That" to my next wine tasting!”

Runner Up

Maker: Joyce H.

Pattern: Ultimate Travel Bag and Easy Does It

Fabric: Zuma and All Stars by Tula Pink from FreeSpirit Fabrics

Story: "This is my second Ultimate Travel Bag. A Christmas gift for my daughter, she used it for a ski trip with family in Colorado, and then took a photo on flight to her home back in London, UK. The bag will then travel to Thailand in January. She loves it! I made two Easy Does Its with same fabric line. I took a class at a quilt shop for the first bag, and this was wonderful to follow up with!"
