March 2011 Newsletter

Greetings!

March has arrived and that means spring in the desert southwest.  My daffodils are completely bloomed out, hyacinths are well on their way, and all the fruit trees are in full bloom.  Daytime temperatures are in the 70's and the springtime winds haven't started yet, so it's a lovely time of year.

I have to confess that it's hard to sit inside at the computer or sewing machine, so I'm going to get busy on this newsletter so that I can get outside for a walk!

Let's start with. . .

NEW PATTERNS

Superior Thread Dispensers

You'll have no more tangled jumbles of thread when you use these handy thread cases.

Special slots in each pocket enable you to easily thread a needle without removing the spools from their pockets, keeping everything neat and orderly.

Designed to hold any of Superior Threads' spools, the large case will hold up to 48 spools of thread as well as scissors, needles and other supplies.

Perfect for individual projects, the small case holds up to 8 spools of thread.

Finishing Kits containing everything needed except the fabric are also available.

Kyle the Crocodile

Someone you know is sure to love one of these friendly, smiling crocodile plush toys.

Minkee or other plush fabric makes them soft and cuddly.

Superior Threads' Texture Magic™ adds great texture to the fabric (optional).

ByAnnie's Soft and Stable™ gives them good body and stability.

Pattern includes full-size templates for pieces, instructions for texturizing fabric to look like crocodile scales, and complete step-by-step instructions for assembling the crocs.

Springtime in New York

One paper pieced block in two color variations makes these fresh, lively quilts.

Pattern includes instructions for 58" x 78" throw or 88" x 108" queen quilt.

Full-sized foundation patterns (to copy) are included along with step-by-step instructions for paper piecing and assembling the quilts.

Helpful tools for paper piecing are the Add-A-Quarter ruler and 12" flexible ruler.

Feeling Crabby (for Gelato fabrics)

Use fabric texturized with Texture Magic™ to make the crab shells for this eye-catching quilt.

Easy-to-follow instructions take you step-by-step through the simple process of texturizing, cutting, and sewing the quilt.

Paper piecing makes construction of the blocks easy and accurate.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This version of the pattern is specifically written for fabrics from E. E. Schenck's Cara Collection Gelato line. Just two fabrics make the quilt: a light to dark red gradating fabric and a light to dark blue gradating fabric.

If you prefer to make the quilt using a variety of fabrics in blues, red, and oranges, you'll find complete instructions in the original Feeling Crabby pattern.

Criss Cross

A guy in your life is sure to love one of these masculine quilts — and you'll love how easy they are to piece.

Pattern includes step-by-step instructions for assembling a 76" x 94" twin or 95" x 113" queen quilt.

Time-saving techniques for cutting and piecing and templates for easy half square triangles make quick work of the attractive quilts.

We now carry Texture Magic™ in a variety of sizes — and the more you buy, the more you save!

Quilt Layout Markers

Have you ever arranged and re-arranged all the blocks for your quilt on your design wall, moving blocks until you have them "just so."

But, when you took the blocks down to sew them into rows, something got out of order or turned upside down. . . well, you know the drill.

If so, you will love this handy set of eighty 2" x 2" Quilt Layout Markers.

Large numbers on the heavy white cardstock tags make them easy to read on any color of fabric.  Bright yellow dividers separate the markers into rows and a sturdy 2" ring keeps them neatly together between projects.

Serenity Shoulder Bag Kits

Make your own classy Serenity Shoulder Bag using the same fabrics and supplies as used for the purse shown on the pattern cover.

Over the past year I have regularly received emails from quilters wanting to know "where can I get those gorgeous fabrics used on that bag". . . so kits are now available.

Kits contain everything you need to make one Serenity Shoulder Bag including the pattern, fabrics, Texture Magic™, wool batting, precut ByAnnie's Soft and Stable™, interfacing, and wooden rings.

The only thing you will need to add is a spool of thread!

Tooltron Oilers

It is a good practice to oil the machine after each day's work or after 8 to 10 hours of use.

Even if you do not use your machine often, oil it occasionally to keep the oil from drying and gumming.

Be sure to carefully follow the instructions in the manual for your machine.

Make oiling your machine easy with this great little tool from Tooltron.

  • Multi-purpose synthetic-based oil.

  • Ideal for sewing machines and sergers.

  • Also good for hunting, fishing, hobby, marine, or other household uses.

  • Fine point makes applying oil easy.

  • Pocket clip for easy carrying.

FEATURED PATTERNS

All Occasions Baskets pattern cover

All Occasion Baskets

Cheery fabric baskets in two styles make perfect projects for holidays or special occasions.

Add some interest by texturizing part of the basket with Texture Magic.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The first baskets I made using this pattern were made before ByAnnie's Soft and Stable™ was available. So, I used DecorBond, the strongest fusible interfacing I could find, to reinforce the basket body and handles.

Unfortunately, every time I took one of these baskets to a show, the handles would flop and fall over. I was continually trying to prop them up.

So, for the past several baskets, I've substituted ByAnnie's Soft and Stable™ for the DecorBond. It works wonderfully!

I can smash the bag down in a box to take to a show and it comes right back into shape. Best of all, I can push down on the handle, and it pops right back up. Give it a try on your next basket or bag!

Pattern includes complete instructions for texturizing fabric as well as piecing using traditional piecing methods or foundation paper piecing.

PATTERN CORRECTIONS

Hoot 'n' Annie

If you purchased a Hoot 'n' Annie Owl Softies pattern within the past few months, please double-check the pattern pieces.

For some reason, the seam lines on some of the pattern pieces did not show up when some of the patterns were printed.

Check my website for info about necessary pattern corrections.
