In this class, you will learn step-by-step construction techniques to make a stylish, durable and professional-quality backpack with pockets, zippered compartments, a magnetic flap and more.

You'll get tips for choosing the right fabrics, stabilizer and zippers, as well as for quilting, cutting and labeling your bag pieces.

Start your backpack by cutting and joining bias binding strips. Find out how to sew a padded handle, straps and strap tabs, as well as a front flap with a magnetic snap.

Make your backpack super-functional by creating pockets! You'll learn to make slip pockets for credit cards, a zippered quilted pocket and a zippered mesh pocket.

Insert a double-slide zipper into your backpack's zipper strips. I will show you how to shape and attach the zipper strip to the side strip to create the side area of your backpack.

Then you'll complete the front and back panels of your backpack by adding all of your interior and exterior pockets. I'll show you how to shape the corners for professional results.

End class by assembling the front, back and sides of your backpack. You'll learn how to sew and bind the inner seams using bias binding, and how to properly assemble and adjust your straps. Polish it up by adding zipper pulls.

The Essential Backpack is fun to make and perfect for gifts!

In addition to offering you a discount on the class price, we've also put together Finishing Kits for the Essential Backpack.

These Finishing Kits include the necessary zippers (your choice of 48 colors), interfacing, mesh (your choice of 7 colors), and a magnetic snap for the flap.

To complete the bag, you will also need fabric, ByAnnie's Soft and Stable, and hardware as listed in the Class Materials. You can choose from hardware in antique brassnickel, or black (plastic).

NOTE: This class is perfect for anyone who has already purchased either my Back At Ya or my Got Your Back patterns and who wants a little help with the project.

The Essential Backpack was inspired by those backpacks so all the lessons in this class will apply to those patterns as well.  The Essential Backpack is most similar to Back At Ya. (Got Your Back is larger and has additional pockets on the sides of the bag.)

Here's what's different between the The Essential Backpack and Back At Ya:

1. Back At Ya has a zippered pocket made of interfaced fabric on the inside of the bag. The Essential Backpack uses mesh for that pocket instead and also enlarges the pocket somewhat. This reduces bulk and enables one to see what is inside the pocket.

2. Changes in the marking and stitching instructions for the credit card pockets which are under the front pocket result in six separate slots on the Essential Backpack (vs. only three in Back At Ya).

3. Slight changes to the stitching instructions on the flap enable the stitching which attaches the magnetic snap to be hidden on the top of the flap on the Essential Backpack. It shows on the outside of the flap on Back At Ya.

4. The Essential Backpack pattern is arranged a bit differently than the Back At Ya pattern so steps are done in a slightly different order. Steps are basically the same, though, as are cutting directions and dimensions.

I am a lifetime quilter, and have been designing patterns and teaching since 2000.

I like to create and teach practical and useful projects, with helpful instructions every step of the way—one of the reasons why I’m drawn to the Craftsy platform

My quilts and designs have appeared in publications like Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, Quilt, and Memory Makers magazines, and I also created ByAnnie's Soft and Stable™, a product that adds body, stability and professional finish to purses, bags and home decor.

I can’t wait to connect with you in my fourth Craftsy class as you add this fun and functional backpack to your sewing repertoire.
