Sew Sturdy Home Organizers

Our 2nd Craftsy Class!

Sew stylish, durable storage solutions that will make your home more organized! Join me, instructor Annie Unrein, in my online Craftsy class, Sew Sturdy: Home Organizers. I’ll teach you all the skills you need to create my fun designs for a set of handy lidded nesting baskets and a cute catch-all caddy!

During class, take the fuss out of working with multiple layers as I show you tricks for sewing through fabric and stabilizer without jamming your machine. You’ll learn to create quilted pieces that keep your organizers standing, insider tricks for working with bias binding and how to seamlessly join binding for a polished look. Plus, customize your organizers to meet your needs with pockets, handles, lids and more!

We’ll start class by working on our charming nesting baskets. I’ll give you pointers for choosing the right fabric and stabilizer, before I show you my methods for cutting perfect circles and creating sturdy side handles.

Bring your baskets to life in lesson two. See how to prepare the side of the basket and attach the handles and label. In the same lesson, I’ll share my secret for sewing a curved edge with ease, and you’ll finish your basket by making a lid. All that’s left to do is stash your treasures knick-knacks in style!

As we create the versatile carry-all caddy, you’ll get a can’t-miss, time-saving trick for quilting your fabric pieces. Then, in lesson four, follow along as I demonstrate how to create the stabilizer sleeve for the bottom of the bag. I’ll also give you step-by-step instructions so you can get a grip on making sturdy padded handles and binding your slip pockets.

Turn your caddy into a feat of fabulous organization in lesson five with clever inner dividers and bellowed pockets. I’ll break down the processes for both and show you a simple trick that looks like binding, but doesn’t require the extra steps. I’ll also share an easy-to-learn method for precise marking and stitching.

When we get to lesson six, I’ll share some techniques that you’ll surely want to pocket! For the zippered pocket of your bag, I’ll show you an approachable trick for securely installing my favorite style of handbag zipper, so you can do it with confidence. You’ll also learn how to position and attach both side pockets, and I’ll discuss my favorite method for cutting bias binding to finish off your raw edges.

Before you know it, it’s time to assemble your bag! We’ll bring it all together in lesson seven as I help you attach your handles, inner dividers and front pockets. We’ll assemble the sides of the bag in lesson eight, where we’ll also attach bias binding. You’ll learn how to create “grab handles” for functionality and finish with my tricks for seamlessly joining binding to achieve a polished look!

I’m a lifetime sewer and quilter, and when it comes to designing and teaching, I’ve been at it for nearly 15 years. I like to create and teach practical and useful projects — like these organizers — with helpful instructions every step of the way. You can find my designs in publications like Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, Quilt and Memory Makers magazines, but my designing doesn’t stop there: I’ve even created my own alternative to stabilizer, ByAnnie's Soft and Stable™, so you can add incredible body toin purses, home decor items and more!

I’m so excited to team up with people who are as dedicated to your learning as I am. Craftsy classes are yours for a lifetime, so you can watch at your own pace and revisit as many times as you’d like!
