ByAnnie Top Voted

WINNER: Kate M.

ABOUT: Kate sewed an Ultimate Travel Bag for someone she met while traveling.

THEIR STORY: “I made this bag for a young lady I met while traveling through an airport. She commented on my Ultimate Travel Bag which was also horse printed fabric. I hope she loves it as much as I loved making it for her."

WHAT WE LOVED: Not only did we love the fun horse fabric that Kate used, we loved that she sewed this bag for someone she met.

Storyteller Award

WINNER: Carole G.

ABOUT: Carole told us a story about an educational trip she took to Florida with her sisters. She made sure to sew a Catch All Caddy for each of them to hold their supplies.

THEIR STORY: "My sisters and I spent this year (2021) planning our first Sister Craftapalooza at St. George Island on the Forgotten Coast in Florida. We found a lovely beach house rental to have our get-away. We each had to teach a craft to the other two and then the rest of the time was spent eating delicious plant-based meals, crafting and relaxing.

We learned wool felting, how to make Danish stars and pompoms and touched on some English Paper Piecing. I knew my sisters would appreciate a Catch-All Caddy to hold all their supplies. I made the purple and blue caddy first and while the mistakes aren't noticeable, they are there and I learned a lot with that first caddy. The binding was the hardest part going through all those layers and I dreaded binding the other two.

The secret to these thick bindings is to clean out the bobbin area, start with a fresh 90/14 topstitch needle, and go slow and steady. Be the turtle when attaching the binding to this caddy.

I will probably just make one more for our family room to hold the many remotes and our reading glasses. And probably another one for my first grandbaby's nursery. So many uses for this handy caddy."

Quilt Shop Highlight

WINNER: The Wright Fabric

THEIR STORY: "After attending a Wind Turbine Tech School, my son got his first real job with a GE Wind Company! Their colors are Orange and Blue, so I made him the Travel Duffle 2.0 bag, so that he can take it on the planes. He has started collecting patches from his travel and we are putting them on his bag."

Honorable Mention

WINNER: Dawn

ABOUT: Dawn is no stranger to sewing ByAnnie patterns and we loved hearing and seeing how her A Place For Everything 2.0 would be used!

THEIR STORY: "I think this is the 9th ByAnnie project I have made and as I have always wanted to make this pattern when I saw there was a new version now was the time.

With the use of the right tools, zippers, vinyl, stiletto and optional video… and then with the “one step at a time” approach it came together easily.

Now that is all completed and packed with goodies I have to say it does meet up with its pattern name! (Except the coffee cup hehehe) The back pockets are great for portable light and glasses for easy access too. I like how you can remove the inside pages too.

I just love this handy bag size and is so good to put all project items together. I know this bag will have so much use. I did a little FMQ sketching on the bird fabric canvas designed by Elizabeth Armstrong then added fabric either size to compliment and to bring to correct width — this resulted in a slightly higher pocket so I simply just adjusted the zipper to be a little higher on the front.

The overall bag size is so handy and is smaller than the equally as good Divide and Conquer that I made earlier in the year."

Honorable Mention

WINNER: Heather F.

ABOUT: Heather told us all about the special fabrics she used for her Round Trip Duffle. We love hearing the backstory behind planning a project!

THEIR STORY: "This is my first ByAnnie pattern that I’ve done. I was very intimidated at first, then I cracked open the pattern, watched the add-on videos, and realized how easy it is.

I got the Hawaiian fabric back in 2010 when I visited Hawaii for the very first time. I’ve had that fabric all these years and haven’t had the courage to do anything with it. It’s too beautiful, too special. This year we booked a trip to Hawaii again. Then I remembered ByAnnie’s multiple duffle-bag patterns. So I picked one out, worked up the courage to use this fabric, and got to work. I’m soooooo happy at the way it came out! It makes me smile every time I look at it. And there is added joy in having some gorgeous Tula Pink fabric in this Round Trip Duffle bag.

Thanks ByAnnie for making such awesome patterns. I can’t wait for the next project!"

Honorable Mention

WINNER: Theresa J.

ABOUT: We loved the Switchback that Theresa sewed in these lovely Tula Pink fabrics. How delightful!

THEIR STORY: “I am a paraplegic and live my life in a wheelchair. I don't carry purses or bags that have to be carried on my lap, so my only alternative is backpacks. I bought the pattern and stared at it for almost a year before working up the courage to tackle the project. I originally bought Tula Pink's De La Luna for this project, but I was afraid of messing up so I used the Tabby Road fabric I had laying around. I love it just as much now that it's done. The hardest part of assembling the backpack was the final inside seam. My machine had a hard time going through so many layers, so I had to finish it by hand. It was totally worth it though.

I'm now ready for my next backpack."

#SEWPINK CATEGORY WINNERS

#SEWPINK

WINNER: Cindy M.

THEIR STORY: "This Clemson Bosom Buddy was made for my sister-in-law who went through breast cancer surgery two years ago and continues to experience discomfort from the scar tissue from time to time. She found this seat belt cushion to be very helpful, providing the perfect amount of padding without being too bulky. And it also gives her a new way to display her favorite team's colors when she is on the road. (Go Tigers!)

The COVID lockdown last year and the need for new face masks inspired me to uncover my sewing machine and renew my lifelong, though somewhat dormant, interest in sewing.

While we had to stay home, I started to explore some of the many sewing and quilting tutorials now available online, found new online sources of fabric and other craft supplies, and began to expand and update my fabric stash. I soon stumbled on ByAnnie.com, where I discovered patterns, supplies and videos that help me learn new skills while making fun and useful bags and gifts for my friends and family. (And also help me to justify my growing fabric stash...) This project was a great way to practice bias binding and produces such a useful item. I already have plans for at least three more Bosom Buddies for other family and friends. Thank you, Annie, for your great patterns and your inspiration!"

#SEWPINK

WINNER: Cyndy

THEIR STORY: "This is my second time getting breast cancer, both times found early through my annual mammogram. This second time has been much harder. Both times I had surgery but this time I had to have chemo and radiation. This has been the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I can't say enough how important it is to self check yourself every month and to get an annual mammogram! I can't believe how many young women I've met who have gotten breast cancer! Your chances are so good IF it's found early!

These items I've made have helped me through surgery and treatment. However the Bosom Buddy is something I think I'll use all the time! It really keeps the seatbelt off my neck, which can be annoying in the warmer weather when the seatbelt can dig into your neck! I wasn't able to add the Heart Pillow by Sew So Easy, which was great to use after surgery during the day and helped also while sleeping to keep my arm off my incision."

#SEWPINK Grand Prize

WINNER: Denise E.

THEIR STORY: "I love your bags. I love that all the seams and zippers are sealed and beautiful inside and out. My daughter wanted me to make an art project bag for her 5yr old daughter. She requested pinks and purples, her favorite colors.

I am one year post breast cancer surgery and treatment so PINK was perfect. I love that there are so many different textures to the fabrics (checkerboard, florals, eyeballs, batiks) and it is so random but BRIGHT. I decided to add a bit of green just to divert from the pink/purple overload.

Since I had no idea what fabrics would go where until I started laying them all out and seeing how much I had, I had to buy just straight white zippers but utilized as many colored pulls as possible. It is bright. It is crazy. It is Totally Addie. That is what I shall call it."

#SEWPINK

WINNER: Linda S.

THEIR STORY: "I made two of the Bosom Buddies one for me and one for a friend because my seatbelt in my car was uncomfortable and using the Soft and Stable really helped with the seatbelt fit. It was a pleasure to work with the pattern because of the small checkboxes where I can check each step off as I completed and it was a so well written pattern, loved it."

#SEWPINK

WINNER: Lynda

THEIR STORY: "I learned that a family member had been diagnosed with breast cancer and I immediately knew I wanted to gift her with the Bosom Buddy. I wanted it to be bright and fun."

WHAT THEY WON: $15 coupon to use on ByAnnie.com

#SEWPINK

WINNER: Monica H.

THEIR STORY: "My life long friend had her annual mammogram 9/2020 and was referred to see a specialist. Because of the pandemic she had to wait to have a biopsy and see a surgeon until 12/2020. After a biopsy she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surgery was finally done 2/2021 only after she tested negative for Covid. Her husband dropped her off literally at the door of the hospital, since no one was allowed inside. Successful surgery was done. But my dear friend was alone in the hospital. Her husband anxiously awaited a call to come and pick her up at the door of the hospital. Her prognosis is excellent. The cancer was encapsulated. No chemotherapy or radiation treatment was recommended.

With the vaccination just being ready, we were still pretty much all isolating. What came to mind was making my friend Annie’s Bosom Buddy. I had her favorite French General fabric color from a quilt I had made for her. It was a meaningful and relatively easy project to make for my lifelong friend, which she was presented as soon as we were both vaccinated."

#SEWPINK

WINNER: Nisrin B.

THEIR STORY: "Just recently got diagnosed with Breast CA stage 1 and after the biopsy I realized that there was discomfort from the seatbelt. I am scheduled for Surgery this coming week so I decided to make this [Bosom Buddy] for myself and a friend going through the same. She is currently in chemotherapy and so it will help her with her port site. Being a nurse by profession I tried to use this time waiting for my treatment to start by being productive and proactive."
