Storyteller Award
WINNER: Lisa H
Pattern: Clam Up
THEIR STORY: The women in my family (my sisters, daughters, and nieces) are obsessed with Dirty Dancing and have been for more than 30 years.
My nephew got married this past weekend and it's the first time we have every welcomed a woman into our family.
I wanted to make something that represented us as a group to make her feel a part of us. The fabric was a no-brainer but the pattern needed to represent the shape...and there's only one pattern I know of that was perfect: Clam Up! They were a HUGE hit.
WHAT THEY WON: $50 coupon to use on ByAnnie.com
Honorable Mention
WINNER: Amy T @sewwhatbyamy
PATTERN: Hot & Heavy
THEIR STORY: After viewing ByAnnie’s Lives and being inspired, I tried my hand at putting a creative twist on the large Hot and Heavy pattern. The plans for this project is to use the bag for cosmetics and toiletries.
I decided on Tula Pink’s fabrics, added vinyl to the inside fabric, used Tula Pink’s ribbon on the zipper pocket, and Carl Hentsch paper pieced pattern for the flying geese trimmed with ByAnnie fold over elastic on the back of the bag for the finale. Yay for ByAnnie Lives and her talented guest.
WHAT WE LOVED: Our team member Casey had this to say, " Love the piecing and the in progress photo."
WHAT THEY WON: $15 coupon to use on ByAnnie.com
Honorable Mention
WINNER: Colleen S @cm_schulze
PATTERN: Tools of the Trade, Ditty Bags
THEIR STORY: Tools of the Trade bag has always intrigued me! I bought the pattern after I heard Annie say the large bag holds the extra large Stripology ruler in one of her Live By Annie shows.
Well, I had registered to take Gudrun Erla’s class at Road to California. I had previously purchased the Tula Pink main fabric with no idea of what project to use it in and voila, had purchased the needed yardage.
I finished the bag in time for Road to CA and carried all my supplies to class. In class it was the only bag of its kind and received many complements!!
Fast forward to the summer, I entered this bag in the Ventura County Fair along with 3 quilted/embroidered wall hangings. My Tools of the Trade bag not only received a first place award, but it also was given a special award! There was also a note on the bag that someone wanted to either buy the bag or get the pattern for it. I called her and told her all about Patterns by Annie and where to purchase them.
Lesson learned: watch out that the zipper pull on the long side zipper in step X does not come off at the top during construction before the final side is stitched down. It literally took me 3 hours to get that pull back on!
I learned a lot about the anatomy of the zipper and pull and in the end it was Annie’s stiletto that helped me work the cut end of the coil back into place. I certainly celebrated!!! I did not want to unstitch all that work!!! I have made many By Annie bags and love how they always turn out. Your patterns are well written!!
WHAT WE LOVED: Annie had this to say, " Colleen's Tools of the Trade turned out beautifully — I can see why it won a blue ribbon! I enjoyed reading her story of her experience making it and all that she learned."
WHAT THEY WON: $15 coupon to use on ByAnnie.com
Honorable Mention
WINNER: Emily F
PATTERN: Ultimate Travel Bag
THEIR STORY: I’ve made several bags now and really wanted to tackle the Get Out of Town 2.0. We are going on a trip to the Northeast in October and I wanted a special bag to take along. I spent some time looking for the perfect fabric and finally found it! What could be more fun than fabric printed with sewing and quilting license plates! I used their outer edges as my quilt lines and love the look. I spent a lot of time planning the placement of the license plates and adjusting the cutting of the fabric.
This bag had lots of pieces and I found it really helps to put labels on everything. I also learned the true value of my stiletto! I’ve used it on other projects but found it to be essential for this bag.
It was really worth the time to align the fabric print. And to carefully follow the instructions. I’m so proud of the final result!
WHAT WE LOVED: Our team member Teresa had this to say, " I love that Emily used a very specific fabric with interesting design and fussy cut things to be just the way she wanted. It turned out great and a wonderful use for that novelty fabric."
A special "thank you" to everyone who submitted to this photo contest. We had a wonderful time viewing submissions and reading your stories. We look forward to sharing as many of them as possible on our social media.
